About this Project
The State University of New York (SUNY) is one of the largest systems of higher education in the United States, with over 465,000 enrolled students across New York state and Washington D.C. Its broad reach also includes over 1.1 million adult education students. As SUNY continues to grow, its campuses undertake new construction and renovation projects to serve their expanding populations.
One recent addition is a 23’ x 152’ metal-framed skylight installed by Crystal Structures over the main hall of the Physical Education department at SUNY’s Purchase campus. The expansive ridgelite skylight floods the multi-story atrium with ample natural light. Students can now exercise bathed in daylight, which research suggests has both psychological and physiological benefits compared to artificial lighting. The skylight also reduces the department’s electricity costs and carbon footprint.
Centered under the new skylight is the SUNY logo, which almost appears to float luminously within the airy atrium. The skylight brings attention and glory to the university emblem, reinforcing school spirit and pride.
Crystal Structures earned the project based on its long history building glazed structures across SUNY campuses. Their technical expertise and creative vision have delivered many iconic and functional skylights. The Purchase Physical Education skylight is just the latest example of Crystal Structures enhancing the learning environments of New York’s students through smart daylighting solutions. Its environmental and aesthetic impacts will benefit the campus community for decades to come.
