About this Project
The Logan High School, originally built in 1964, has undergone many upgrades over the years. But in 2014, the school board took a fresh approach by engaging students and architects to “reinvent” the school. With limited land for expansion, the reinvention focused on remodeling the existing building.
A key part of the remodeling is the addition of a large skylight to brighten up the previously dim cafeteria space. The skylight measures 17’ x 14’ and features a double-hipped metal frame to maximize durability and light transmission. With this new skylight installed, the cafeteria has been transformed into a beautiful atrium full of natural light.
The benefits of adding this expansive skylight are multifold. First, studies show that natural daylight improves health, well-being, and learning outcomes for students. The brighter cafeteria will be a more uplifting and engaging space for them to eat, socialize, and study. Second, the skylight will significantly reduce the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours, providing environmental and cost savings. Finally, the modern skylight gives the dated building an updated, contemporary feel fitting for a 21st-century learning facility.
While the Logan High School reinvention still has much work ahead, the new skylight is already making a big impact. As the most striking visible change so far, the skylight symbolizes the potential for the school’s full transformation into a collaborative, innovative space for students to learn and thrive. The cafeteria’s evolution into a sunlight-filled atrium sets the tone for more student-centered upgrades to come.
