About this Project
The Delaware Center for Horticulture incorporated an impressive skylight as part of their building updates. The skylight measures 21’ long by 33’ across, forming a large peaked atrium over the entryway into the center. From the outside, the skylight is partially obscured by the surrounding canopy and lush greenery covering the building. But upon stepping inside, the overhead glass roof structure makes a striking statement.
Natural light pours into the atrium through the expansive skylight overhead. The peaked glass ceiling allows sunlight to flood the open space below. The roof seems to disappear as your eyes are drawn upwards towards the sunlight and open sky.
The Delaware Center for Horticulture utilizes this atrium for special events and activities that support the mission of community outreach and horticulture education. The tall, airy room with sunlight streaming in from above creates an ideal space for gatherings and workshops. Displays of plants are artfully arranged beneath the skylight as well.
Incorporating daylighting into the building design through an overhead skylight demonstrates the Delaware Center for Horticulture’s commitment to environmental responsibility and appreciation for the natural world. The glass ceiling reflects and amplifies the beauty of sunlight while reducing electricity usage. It’s an inspired architectural feature that mirrors the core values of the center it shelters below.
